Lapland isn't one place
Rovaniemi, Levi, Saariselkä, Kiruna, Abisko, Tromsø: five very different bases all get filed under "see the northern lights." Each has its own climate, access, atmosphere and dominant stay type. Picking the right destination matters as much as picking the right dates. And while the northern lights remain the common thread of this guide, the region is also about Santa Claus Village, husky sledding and a handful of other winter experiences.
This guide compares destinations and stays without trying to sell you the priciest package. Every listing links to our booking partners (Booking.com, Airbnb, GetYourGuide) only when the offer genuinely matches what you're looking for. See our method →
Experience Lapland
Beyond the northern lights: Santa, husky sledding and the great outdoors, Lapland has more than one speed.

DiscoverSanta Claus Village
8 km north of Rovaniemi on road 4, the Arctic Circle line is marked on the ground, with a crossing certificate to take home. An official Santa Claus post office, year-round meetings with Santa: the village is open 365 days a year and welcomes over 500,000 visitors annually.
DiscoverHusky sledding
Guided husky safaris near Rovaniemi, Levi, Saariselkä or Ylläs, typically 195 to 240 EUR including transport. Reputable operators such as Bearhill Husky, Apukka Husky and Nordic Odyssey take dog welfare seriously, with rest days and a proper retirement.
DiscoverActive winter
Snowmobiling on frozen lakes, snowshoeing through forests, meeting reindeer and Sami herders: Lapland is worth living beyond the night sky too. Plenty to fill your days before dark falls.

Frequently asked questions
What we get asked most before an aurora trip.
How far in advance should I book?
For the most in-demand glass igloos and ice hotels, book 6 to 10 months ahead, especially for December-January dates and European school holidays. Standard hotels can be booked later, 2 to 3 months is usually enough.
What is the best time to see the northern lights?
The season runs September to April, with peak odds in October, then again in February-March, when skies tend to be clearer than deep winter. December-January bring the longest nights but also more frequent cloud cover depending on the destination.
Does a glass igloo guarantee I'll see the lights?
No. No stay, however well positioned, can guarantee a sighting: it depends on solar activity and cloud cover, two factors nobody controls. A glass igloo simply maximises your odds by letting you watch the sky from bed instead of standing outside in the cold.
What budget should I plan for?
A well-located standard hotel typically runs 100 to 200 EUR a night in season. A glass igloo or ice hotel runs more like 250 to 600 EUR a night depending on destination and comfort level. Budget separately for guided excursions if you're not driving yourself.
Which town should I pick for my kind of trip?
That is exactly what this guide compares: families do well in Rovaniemi, skiers in Levi, budget or authenticity seekers in Saariselka or Abisko, a real city plus fjord in Tromso. There is no single right answer, it depends on what you want beyond the lights.
Do I need to rent a car?
It depends on the town. Tromso and resort villages like Levi or Saariselka work well on foot or by shuttle. A car becomes useful for remote wilderness cabins or exploring a national park on your own schedule.
Can kids come along on an aurora trip?
Yes, with some planning: industry practice tends to recommend a minimum age around 4 for late-night outings, dressed in warm layers. A stay with its own aurora view (glass igloo, cabin) also cuts down on how much you need to go outside in the cold.
